₦3.5M Raised, No Proof: Nigerians Demand Answers from Viral X Appeal

A viral medical appeal by an X (formerly Twitter) user is now the subject of public outrage and calls for police investigation, after over ₦3.5 million was donated without any verifiable proof of the condition it was meant to support.
The user, known as @barbiecuefish, took to the platform to plead for financial help, claiming her sister needed ₦10 million for a kidney transplant. In her emotional video and accompanying posts, she said she had exhausted all other options and turned to the public for help.
“Please guys, I really need your support. It wasn’t easy for me to put this on the internet, but I have no other choice. Help me share too,” she wrote, sharing her Zenith Bank account number (2403903690) under the name Dorcas Eboselumwen Akpolo.
In a follow-up post, she adjusted the initial figure, saying the family was now seeking ₦7 million, and reiterated her appeal:
“Please, I am in need of you guys’ support. Anything will help. Nothing is too small. Please help me save my little sister.”
Shortly after, she posted an update thanking contributors and claiming to have raised ₦1.5 million, stating that ₦5.5 million remained. The campaign gained momentum as more users amplified her plea, including another user @DiianaD_, who vouched for the authenticity of the situation.
But the tone quickly changed.
As the donations crossed ₦3.5 million, questions began pouring in. Concerned donors and observers asked for evidence—a doctor’s report, hospital bills, or any documentation confirming the alleged health emergency. Days passed, but @barbiecuefish failed to produce a single medical document.
In response to the growing skepticism, she wrote:
“I don’t know why you guys feel like I’m lying… I will definitely post the medical report. She didn’t sleep all through the night, so I believe she’s sleeping now. When she wakes up, I’ll tell her to send it to me.”
She added that she had screenshots of all payments made toward the treatment and would post them if necessary.
However, nearly a day later, no proof had surfaced.
The delay prompted user @usifoh_gift to publicly tag authorities, urging the Nigeria Police Force, EFCC, and Nigerian Navy to investigate what she described as a “rapid scam case.”
“Hi @PoliceNG, allegedly @barbiecuefish and her assistant @DiianaD_ planned together to scam people of their money… without proof or evidence. We urge you to look into this because a lot of people have donated their hard-earned money.”

The post has since sparked debates across social media. While some users expressed sympathy and called for patience, others are adamant that the lack of transparency points to fraud.
As of now, no official statement has been released by the police or relevant authorities, and @barbiecuefish has remained silent regarding the promised documentation.
