How Jigawa Delegates Turned a Peaceful Atiku-Obi Coalition Meeting into Chaos

A coalition meeting aimed at fostering unity among opposition leaders took an unexpected turn on Sunday when delegates from Jigawa State disrupted the session in Abuja.
The gathering, held at the Continental Hotel, brought together key political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and others.
What started as a calm, orderly meeting quickly spiraled into confusion when Babachir Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced that a delegation from Taraba would speak on behalf of Jigawa State. That announcement didn’t sit well with Jigawa delegates, who stormed the stage in protest.
Chanting and demanding to be properly represented, the visibly angry delegates blocked the nominated speakers and insisted they had not authorized anyone from Taraba to speak for them.
Watch chaotic moment:
The situation escalated, prompting security operatives—including the Nigerian Police, DSS, and private guards—to swiftly form a protective barrier around top political figures such as Atiku, Amaechi, and others in attendance.
The order was eventually restored following appeals and intense negotiations. In the end, Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, was selected alongside another delegate to represent the state and address the gathering.
