19-Year-Old Girl Dies by Suicide After Scoring 190 in UTME

A wave of sorrow has swept through the Odogunyan community in Ikorodu, Lagos State, following the tragic death of a 19-year-old girl, Opesusi Faith Timilehin, who took her own life after receiving what she believed was a disappointing score in the recently released Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Faith, who hailed from Abeokuta in Ogun State but resided in Ikorodu, reportedly consumed a poisonous substance known as “Push Out” shortly after discovering she scored 190 in the UTME. Her dream was to study Microbiology, and she had hoped to secure admission this year after a previous attempt last year yielded a higher score.
A close family friend said she became deeply distressed upon seeing her result and repeatedly expressed hopelessness. “She was very disappointed. She kept saying last year’s result was better and that she had no hope again,” the friend recounted.
Faith was rushed to Kolak Hospital in Odogunyan, but despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead. In a cruel twist of fate, just 30 minutes after her death was confirmed, she received an email from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), notifying her of a provisional admission offer to study Microbiology.
“The shocking revelation is that she was given an admission message via her Gmail immediately after she was confirmed dead at Kolak Hospital,” a source told Read Naija.
The news of her passing has plunged the neighborhood into mourning. Residents described Faith as a humble and well-behaved girl who had high hopes for her academic future.
Her grieving parents have since traveled down from Abeokuta to retrieve her body for burial, as friends, neighbors, and sympathizers continue to troop in, expressing both condolences and outrage.
Some community members have called out JAMB, blaming the examination body for what they described as a poorly managed exam season that led to mass failure and emotional breakdowns among many candidates.
This heartbreaking incident has reignited conversations about the pressure placed on young Nigerians during the university admissions process, as well as the need for better mental health support systems for students.
May her soul rest in peace.
