70 Meters of Pride: Kwara Raises West Africa’s Tallest Flagpole to Celebrate Unity and Progress

Kwara State made history on Monday as it raised what is now the tallest flagpole in British West Africa, standing proudly at 70 meters. But beyond its height, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq says the flagpole carries a deeper meaning: it’s a symbol of Nigeria’s unity, pride, and shared future.
At a brief but colorful event in Ilorin, the flag was hoisted in the presence of hundreds of residents, including government officials, civil servants, and community members from different parts of the city. The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju, said the flagpole is more than just a structure—it’s a bold reminder of who we are as a people.
“This isn’t just about raising a flag,” he said. “It’s about lifting our spirits, celebrating our identity, and showing the world that Kwara is moving forward.”
Other commissioners who joined in the ceremony were Aliyu Kora Sabi (Transport), Nafisat Buge (Environment), and Nnafatima Imam (Social Development). The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Nurudeen Abdulraheem, was also present, along with other senior officials.
The Governor noted that the new flagpole stands tall among several major projects his administration has completed, like the Visual Arts Centre, the Innovation Hub, and the Garment Factory—all of which reflect the new face of Kwara.
“This flagpole tells our story. It tells visitors that this is a state that values beauty, culture, and unity. It’s one of those landmarks that people will come to see, take pictures with, and talk about,” he said.
He also used the opportunity to speak about the government’s ongoing work—rehabilitating roads, improving hospitals, supporting farmers and traders, and helping those who need it most through social support programs.
“But it’s not just about buildings or numbers,” he added. “It’s also about how people feel. Monuments like this give us something to be proud of. They remind us of our journey and where we’re headed as a people.”
