Mixed Reactions as Davido and Omah Lay’s ‘With You’ is Played in White Garment Church

A viral video showing children dancing to Davido and Omah Lay’s hit song With You during a service at a white garment church has sparked a wave of mixed reactions across social media.

The video, which was first shared by a female attendee of the church, shows a troupe of children dressed in white robes dancing rhythmically to the secular Afrobeats track inside the church premises. The upbeat song, which has gained massive popularity among fans, appears to have replaced the usual gospel music that is commonly expected during worship sessions.

The clip has since stirred widespread debate, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief at the blending of secular pop music with Christian worship. While a few applauded the church’s attempt to stay culturally relevant and youth-friendly, the overwhelming majority condemned it as inappropriate.

Here are some of the reactions:

@Simplytrendd commented: “Sweet Fanta Diallo inside church… everything is now cruise.”

@dlazygirl was clearly disappointed, writing: “From Opomulero to this??? Why would anyone even think this was a good idea? Really sad.”

@Dailygistz reflected on how worship music has changed over time: “Na ‘He Lives in You’ we dey dance that year oh… Dem for just wear white socks and hand gloves make e just complete na.”

Others pointed out the potential consequences of blending secular music into sacred spaces, warning that the line between entertainment and worship is becoming increasingly blurred.

Some defenders, however, argued that the church might have chosen the song for its rhythm or to engage young people, not necessarily to promote secular lifestyles. “At least the kids are in church,” one user wrote in a now-deleted comment.
