Mike Ozekhome Warns: Nigeria Sliding Toward One-Party Rule and Dictatorship

Renowned constitutional lawyer Mike Ozekhome has raised the alarm over Nigeria’s political landscape, saying the country is quietly steering itself toward a one-party state, and potentially, dictatorship.
Speaking in a recent interview with Channels TV, Ozekhome reacted sharply to the ongoing wave of politicians defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The latest high-profile defection was Akwa Ibom Governor, Uno Emo, who switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Ozekhome dismissed the mass defections as “bootlicking at its highest level” and warned that this trend threatens Nigeria’s democratic balance.
“People are scrambling to endorse a president who hasn’t even been fully allowed to do his job in over two years,” he said.
He condemned the practice of governors switching parties, often jumping ship from the one that brought them into office to the opposition, saying it shows a disregard for principles. “They are like Akara and Moi Moi; different shapes but essentially the same,” he added.
Ozekhome concluded with a stark warning: “Without realizing it, we’re heading toward a one-party state, and that’s a dangerous path. In such a system, dictatorship rules unchecked.”
