India is mourning the sudden loss of Vijay Rupani, former Chief Minister of Gujarat, who tragically died in a plane crash on June 12, 2025, at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad.

The ill-fated flight, AI171, was bound for London’s Gatwick Airport and carried 242 passengers. Rupani, 68, was reportedly traveling to visit his daughter in the United Kingdom when the crash occurred shortly after takeoff. As of now, the cause of the crash remains under investigation, with aviation authorities working to determine what led to the tragic incident.

Rupani served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021, playing a central role in the state’s infrastructure and industrial development during his tenure. A senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was widely respected across party lines for his calm leadership and commitment to public service.

Tributes have since flooded in from political leaders, civil society groups, and citizens across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Rupani as “a loyal public servant whose vision helped shape Gujarat’s transformation.” Several state and national figures echoed similar sentiments, recalling his humility, work ethic, and devotion to Gujarat’s progress.

Though his tenure as chief minister ended in 2021, Rupani remained active in political and social initiatives and was regarded as a mentor to emerging leaders in Gujarat’s political landscape.

The nation awaits the official findings of the investigation, while condolences continue to pour in for his family, friends, and supporters across the globe.
