The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the recent wave of brutal attacks in Benue State that left more than 200 people dead, urging the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action against the perpetrators.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association described the killings as senseless and a painful symbol of government failure to protect its citizens.

“For too long, the people of Benue have been subjected to recurrent assaults, often blamed on armed groups, without meaningful intervention or justice,” the statement read.

CAN demanded swift prosecution of those responsible and emphasized the urgent need to halt the culture of impunity that has allowed such violence to persist. It also called for the immediate deployment of reinforced security forces to affected communities and proposed the declaration of a state of emergency in the worst-hit areas if necessary.

“This persistent failure to safeguard citizens and bring perpetrators to account has emboldened attackers and prolonged the cycle of violence,” Archbishop Okoh stated.

In addition to domestic measures, CAN appealed to the international community for support in humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts aimed at stabilizing Benue and rebuilding public trust.

“We also appeal to the international community to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and rebuilding trust in Benue State,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The statement reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the sanctity of life and defense of human dignity, urging Nigerians to remain united and resilient amid the crisis.

CAN concluded its statement with a call for all stakeholders — local, national, and international — to rise to the moment and prevent further bloodshed. A solemn prayer for peace and justice in Benue accompanied the appeal.
