Akpabio Fires Shots at a Top Politician—Says He Should Fix His House Before Dreaming Big

Senate President Godswill Akpabio didn’t mince words as he tackled one of Nigeria’s prominent 2023 presidential contenders, Peter Obi, during a high-level session at the National Assembly on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

The gathering, held to honour the legacy of late Niger Delta icon Pa Edwin Clark, quickly took a sharp turn when Akpabio responded to a recent comment made by Obi, where the former Anambra governor implied that Nigeria’s founding heroes may have toiled in vain.

Akpabio wasn’t impressed. Instead, he fired back, questioning Obi’s capacity to lead Nigeria when his own political party is riddled with unresolved internal squabbles. The Senate President hinted that Obi should first demonstrate true leadership by handling the Labour Party’s crisis before making sweeping national criticisms or nursing presidential ambitions.

Using the moment to draw a contrast, Akpabio listed his own achievements during his time as Akwa Ibom State governor, from major infrastructure to education reforms positioning himself as a leader of action, not just rhetoric.

He didn’t stop there. Akpabio threw more jabs at political figures who, according to him, stir division on social media without offering real solutions or managing their political platforms effectively.

Tying it all back to the legacy of the late Edwin Clark, Akpabio suggested the elder statesman would’ve frowned at careless remarks and would have urged politicians to practice discipline—starting from within.
