Benue Gov’s Aide Suspends Top Staff Over Participation in “End Benue Genocide” Protest

The Principal Special Assistant to the Governor of Benue State on Youth and Media Mobilization, Hon. Atu Terver Joseph, has suspended two key members of his team for joining the recent “End Benue Genocide” protest.
Mr. John Ukeyima, Chief of Staff, and Mr. Lubem Terkula, Chief Press Secretary, were both handed indefinite suspensions on Sunday, June 15, following their participation in a youth-led demonstration that swept through parts of the state after deadly attacks claimed the lives of nearly 200 residents in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area.
In a suspension letter dated Sunday night, Terver accused the duo of defying direct orders and undermining the position of his office.
“This letter serves as formal notification of your immediate and indefinite suspensions from your positions as Chief of Staff and Chief Press Secretary, effective June 14, 2025,” it read.
“Your actions have been deemed as working against the explicit directives of your Principal. Such conduct is a serious breach of your duties and the trust placed in your office.”
The letter further instructed the suspended aides to withdraw from all official duties and to cease representing the office in any capacity during the period of suspension.
The protest, sparked by the gruesome massacre in Yelwata and Daudu communities, has drawn widespread attention, with grieving families and concerned citizens demanding urgent government action to end the bloodshed. The suspension has since raised questions about internal discord within the state administration amid growing pressure on leaders to act decisively.
