‘Cancel That Thought!’ – Akpabio Blows Hot, Breaks Silence on Resignation Buzz

Senate President Godswill Akpabio came out swinging on Thursday during a fiery plenary session in Abuja, shutting down speculations about his possible resignation with a blunt, defiant response.
As Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele praised the upper chamber for staying focused amid public pressure, Akpabio cut in sharply, declaring that he wouldn’t step down over what he called baseless allegations. His words were unmistakably direct: “Cancel it! I will not step down.”
Though he didn’t mention specifics, the comment appeared to address the renewed heat following a Court of Appeal judgment that upheld a 2021 conviction of Professor Peter Ogban. The professor was found guilty of manipulating the 2019 senatorial election in Akpabio’s favour.

While Akpabio himself was not convicted, the ruling has stirred public debate, especially on social media, where critics and civic groups have revived demands for him to quit his post. But the Senate President dismissed such noise, framing it as mere distractions from those “dreaming.”
In his usual assertive style, Akpabio made it clear: he’s not backing down, and his focus remains firmly on legislative work, regardless of the chatter.
