Cobhams Asuquo Opens Up on Life as a Blind Musician: “I Embrace My Blindness”

In a candid and heartfelt interview with Hip TV, celebrated Nigerian artist Cobhams Asuquo shared his personal journey living and thriving as a blind musician. Despite his visual impairment, Cobhams has built a remarkable career, attributing his success to determination, resilience, and a positive embrace of his reality.
Addressing the importance of self-acceptance, Cobhams urged people with disabilities to own their identities and draw strength from their unique experiences. He was clear on his preferred terminology, insisting on being described simply as “blind,” rather than the often-used euphemism “visually impaired.”
“My awareness of myself as a blind person makes me work five times as hard as others,” Cobhams explained. “There’s a stereotype that blind people are incapable, and I’ve made it my mission to prove that wrong. I want to show that I can be capable of so much more.”
He further emphasized the power of naming one’s reality without hesitation: “I think it’s totally okay to be blind. The world has become overly sensitive, and while that has its place, I believe in calling things what they are. Don’t live in denial or hide behind euphemisms. Own your reality, and find strength in it.”
Cobhams described his blindness not as a limitation but as a source of motivation and strength. “I’m not visually impaired. I’m completely blind, I can’t see a thing. And that’s totally alright. I’ve made peace with it, even found humour in it sometimes. It’s who I am, and I embrace it.”
Through sharing his story, Cobhams hopes to inspire others facing similar challenges to pursue their dreams and break societal stereotypes about disability.
