Dangote Refinery Eases Burden with ₦10 Fuel Rebate, Marketers Smile at Checkout

The Dangote Petrochemicals Refinery has quietly introduced a ₦10 rebate on the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), offering subtle relief to petrol marketers and a glimmer of hope to Nigerian motorists grappling with high fuel costs.
Though not publicly announced, the development effectively lowers the per-litre cost of petrol from ₦835 to ₦825 for marketers purchasing directly from the refinery. The discount, however, doesn’t reflect upfront — it comes in the form of a rebate after successful loading.
“The Dangote refinery has started giving a rebate on its products. It’s not an official reduction yet, but paid back after marketers buy products from them,” a source familiar with the development told Punch on Monday.
The rebate allows petrol retailers to offer slightly more competitive prices at the pump — with some now selling between ₦830 and ₦835 per litre — undercutting importers and private depots whose prices remain higher.
This rebate follows a more dramatic adjustment in April when Dangote slashed its gantry price twice in one week — from ₦880 to ₦835 per litre — marking a ₦45 reduction that shook the downstream market.
While the move may not immediately translate into drastic relief for end consumers, industry watchers say it signals a shift in Dangote’s strategy — positioning the refinery as a volume player that can undercut competitors and dominate local fuel distribution.
