Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced a new monthly salary of N500,000 for newly employed medical doctors serving in primary healthcare centres across the state.

The governor made the announcement during the official flag-off of a state-wide health activation programme, which included the launch of a Drug Revolving Fund and the distribution of life-saving medical equipment to general hospitals.

Speaking at the event, Governor Nwifuru described the current state of the health sector as unacceptable, noting that years of poor funding, lack of manpower, and outdated equipment had weakened service delivery in rural and urban communities alike.

“This is more than a ceremony. It is a bold step towards revitalizing our healthcare system and fulfilling the health component of our People’s Charter of Needs,” he said.

The governor revealed that his administration has already invested over N10 billion into infrastructure upgrades, essential medical equipment, and personnel recruitment.

As part of that effort, 195 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and lab scientists, have been recruited and posted to general hospitals across the state.

Drug Revolving Fund for Access and Sustainability

A major highlight of the flag-off was the launch of the Drug Revolving Fund, a mechanism designed to ensure steady access to essential drugs across all public health facilities.

“This is a lifeline for our rural communities,” Nwifuru declared. “With this fund, quality medicines will be accessible at affordable prices. The revolving nature guarantees sustainability, transparency, and accountability.”

The state has reportedly delivered over 60% of essential drugs, with full coverage expected in the coming months.

Modern Equipment for Improved Care

Governor Nwifuru also commissioned the distribution of over N1 billion worth of medical equipment, including hospital beds, patient monitors, mattresses, drip stands, and other critical supplies.

“These aren’t just decorations — they are tools that save lives,” he said. “We are also partnering with institutions to retrain our health workers to meet global standards.”

A Call for Accountability and Community Ownership

Urging community leaders and stakeholders to take ownership and monitor public health facilities, the governor emphasized the importance of transparency:

“Health facilities belong to the people, and ownership means responsibility. Any mismanagement of public resources will be dealt with firmly.”

He hinted at recent disciplinary actions within the sector and promised continued oversight.

A Vision for Specialist Hospitals and Digital Health

Governor Nwifuru also unveiled plans to build specialist hospitals in each of the three senatorial zones, reduce medical tourism, and explore digital health solutions and sustainable healthcare financing partnerships.

“Today is a new dawn for health in Ebonyi. Together, we can build a system that delivers hope, healing, and health to all,” he concluded.
