Final Journey: Highlife Icon Mike Ejeagha Buried in Enugu Hometown

The quiet town of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa in Enugu State stood still as Nigeria’s iconic highlife and folklore legend, Mike Ejeagha, was laid to rest over the weekend.
At 95, Ejeagha left behind a musical legacy that stretched beyond melodies — his songs were deep wells of wisdom, culture, and storytelling. Until his passing on a Friday evening at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, the revered artist remained a towering figure in Igbo music, with a repertoire that includes timeless tracks like Omekagu, Uwa Mgbede Ka Mma, and Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche.
Born on April 4, 1930, the folk maestro was known for weaving proverbs, morality, and Igbo philosophy into his lyrics — earning him admiration across generations. Over 300 of his recordings are preserved in the National Archives, a testament to his influence on Nigeria’s cultural and artistic memory.
In an unexpected resurgence of popularity, Ejeagha’s 1983 track Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche recently lit up social media through a viral dance trend, introducing his work to a new generation that may never have seen him perform live.

Tributes have poured in from all corners, including a deeply personal message from Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. Describing the late musician as “a legend and cultural ambassador,” Mbah reflected on Ejeagha’s rare blend of humility and artistic brilliance.
“Mike Ejeagha wasn’t just a singer — he was a teacher, a historian, and a custodian of our identity,” the governor said. “His contributions will never be forgotten.”
Governor Mbah had earlier honoured the late icon by reconstructing and renaming Obinagu Road after him. The now Chief Mike Ejeagha Road leads to the artist’s Abakpa Nike residence and stands as a physical reminder of a voice that shaped generations.
More plans, according to the state government, are underway to further immortalize the legend.
