In a reaction that quickly went viral, U.S. President Donald Trump, while leaving a White House event with military mothers, quipped, “I saw the smoke, but I haven’t seen the pope.” The comment, typical of Trump’s off-the-cuff style, drew laughter from the crowd and a wave of memes online.

Pope Leo XIV, 69, is a former missionary who spent decades serving in Peru. Before his election, he held top positions in the Vatican, including the head of the Dicastery for Bishops.
