“He’s Smarter Than Them” – Ex-Atiku Aide Praises Tinubu’s Political Tactics

Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, has stirred reactions after declaring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is intellectually ahead of his major political opponents, including Atiku and Peter Obi.

Appearing on Politics Today on Channels Television, Sowunmi dismissed speculations that his recent meeting with Tinubu was a betrayal of Atiku or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Instead, he emphasized his autonomy as a political actor.

“I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments,” he said.

Sowunmi, who once contested for the Ogun State governorship ticket under the PDP, commended Tinubu’s strategic leadership and flexible engagement style, describing it as more sophisticated than those of his political peers.

“Do you know the difference between Tinubu and them? He doesn’t have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than them,” he stated.

Pressed further on whether Tinubu is smarter than Atiku, he reiterated, “He’s smarter than them.”

Sowunmi also noted that he has known Tinubu since 1994 and that his recent visit was meant to understand why opposition parties often attribute internal crises to the president’s camp.

His comments have drawn mixed reactions from political circles, with some seeing it as an honest assessment of Nigeria’s political terrain, while others interpret it as a soft pivot toward the ruling party.
