How Drug Lords Turned Pilgrims into Unknowing Mules

Nigerian authorities have thrown a massive wrench into a major drug smuggling operation, reportedly busting a cunning cartel that was trying to use innocent Hajj pilgrims as unwitting couriers for cocaine heading to Saudi Arabia. This audacious plot, now exposed, highlights the lengths to which criminals will go, even exploiting sacred journeys.
Sources indicate that sharp-eyed operatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made crucial arrests right here in Lagos. They nabbed four intending pilgrims who had just swallowed, or were about to swallow, a hefty 2.20 kilograms of cocaine, packed into about 200 pellets. The unsuspecting travelers were lodging at a hotel, likely just hours away from boarding their flight to the holy land when the trap was sprung.
Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), the Chairman and CEO of the NDLEA, didn’t hold back, shedding light on the disturbing trend of criminal networks preying on religious devotion during the Hajj season. He recalled past incidents where individuals, completely unaware, were tricked into carrying illegal drugs. He cited a case from two years ago where three women had their Hajj trips paid for, only to be given bags with cocaine stitched into the lining, meant for delivery to supposed relatives in Saudi Arabia.
Marwa affirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with Saudi authorities to track down every last trafficker attempting to use the pilgrimage as a smokescreen. He emphasized the agency’s unyielding mission, even amidst the funding hurdles they face in fully executing the National Drug Control Master Plan.
These arrests serve as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk even on the most pious of journeys, and the relentless efforts by authorities to protect citizens and shut down the illicit drug trade.
