Kate Henshaw Speaks Out: ‘We’re Treated as Less Than Human in Nigeria’

Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has taken a bold stance against Nigeria’s entrenched patriarchal culture, accusing both society and the legal system of devaluing women.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, Henshaw lamented the persistent gender inequality in the country, describing the societal conditioning of Nigerian men as deeply problematic.
“Nigerian men see women as less than human,” she said. “Even our laws reflect this mindset.”
The award-winning actress pointed to religious misinterpretations and traditional norms as key forces behind the treatment of women in Nigeria. According to her, the original concept of male and female equality, rooted in biblical creation has been distorted over time.
“God created man first, no doubt. But He took the woman from his side, not from his head to rule over him or his feet to be beneath him — but beside him, to reign with him,” Henshaw explained. “Yet, in Nigeria, we’re treated like we don’t belong.”

Henshaw also expressed frustration over legal biases, highlighting inconsistencies in the application of laws like the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP), and the unequal rights of Nigerian women married to foreigners.
“A man who marries a foreigner can easily get her a Nigerian passport. But a woman? She has to jump through endless loops for her foreign husband. Why?” she asked.
“Even the law says a man can ‘reasonably chastise’ his wife. In 2024, how is that still acceptable?”
Her comments have sparked widespread debate on social media, with many praising her courage and echoing calls for urgent reforms to both legal statutes and cultural perceptions.
