Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has stirred fresh national conversation after making a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu concerning late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Lamido made the statement in Abuja during the public presentation of his autobiography titled “Being True To Myself.” Speaking at the event, he reflected on the decades-old democratic struggle and urged Tinubu to settle the ₦45 billion allegedly owed to Abiola by the Federal Government.

“I would like to appeal to President Tinubu to close the chapter of June 12,” Lamido said, addressing the Minister of Information who represented the President at the event. “In his book, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida revealed that Abiola won the election. Abiola is double punished — first, he was denied the presidency; and now, he is still being owed. Please tell [Tinubu] to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. When this money is paid, the chapter of June 12 will be closed. It is very important.”

Lamido’s remarks instantly caught the attention of attendees, including top political figures and dignitaries gathered for the book launch. The former governor thanked Allah for sparing his life to witness the day and used the opportunity to express deep appreciation to key contributors.

He reserved glowing words for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as his “Boss, Guide, Leader, and Inspiration.” Obasanjo, who penned the foreword of the book, was present at the event.

“Baba, I sincerely and profoundly thank you. May God Almighty endow and bless you with abundant health, wisdom, joy, and well-being,” Lamido added.

He also praised former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his integrity and acknowledged the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for honouring the invitation despite a tight schedule.

Lamido recognized the role of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who reviewed the book, describing him as a long-time comrade, and he commended the editorial and organising committees for their tireless work.
