A Nigerian man has successfully recovered ₦2 million and an additional ₦40,000 in POS charges after falling victim to a shocking case of police extortion at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The case came to light through a social media post by activist and X user @YemieFash, who publicly called out the Lagos Police PRO, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, tagging him in a tweet that alleged that a young man was coerced at gunpoint to transfer ₦2 million to police officers for the mere suspicion of trading cryptocurrency.

In his statement, @YemieFash wrote:

“Some officers at FCID Alagbon allegedly held a young man at gunpoint and extorted ₦2 million without any formal charge or documentation. The money wasn’t even his.”

He appealed for urgent intervention, demanding disciplinary action against the involved officers. The post quickly went viral, sparking public outrage and renewed conversations around police misconduct in Nigeria.

Days later, he returned with a relieving update:

“The ₦2 million extorted has been refunded in full, alongside the ₦40,000 POS charges. Huge thanks to AIG Margaret Ochalla of FCID Alagbon, the Police PRO @mayegunAmina, and the Police Complaint Response Unit for acting swiftly.”

He confirmed that the officers had been detained and disciplinary processes were underway, expressing hope that the development would serve as a deterrent to similar abuses of power.

Public Reactions:
Nigerians across social media have responded with a mix of relief, skepticism, and renewed calls for systemic reform:

@sigint_nigeria: “They are criminals in uniform. FCID Annex has a bad reputation; they act like licensed kidnappers.”

@daylearny: “Hope this talk about punishment won’t end in just press releases.”

@_theEmmaa: “Let’s call it what it is: this is armed robbery by law enforcement.”

@Olota48: “If DPOs were held responsible too, the madness would reduce.”

While many commended the police for acting swiftly, others warned that unless structural reforms and stiffer penalties are implemented, rogue officers will continue to prey on innocent citizens.
