A 67-year-old French tourist, Pietier Gilles, was found dead in his hotel room in Gboko, Benue State, after falling ill during a long-distance cycling tour across West Africa.

Gilles, who reportedly entered Nigeria from Niger Republic on May 19, checked into Hotel Jovina on Friday, June 7. By Saturday morning, he was found lifeless in his room, according to reports by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.

The hotel manager, Emmanuel Laha, said the cyclist declined medical help after falling ill. Hotel staff eventually called in a medical practitioner, but it was too late—he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police spokesperson SP Udeme Edet confirmed that officers documented the scene and moved the body to Gboko General Hospital for autopsy. While early indications suggest no foul play, authorities say investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.
