NBTE Unveils Federal Government’s Grant Initiative for Technical College Students

The Federal Government has introduced a monthly grant for students enrolled in technical colleges across Nigeria, in a bid to reposition technical and vocational education as a viable path for youth development and employment.

Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), said the initiative aims to attract more young Nigerians to technical education by offering financial support without the burden of repayment.

“This is not a loan. It’s a grant to encourage enrollment and skills acquisition that can lead to employment both locally and internationally,” he stated.

He noted that technical and vocational education once flourished during the colonial and early independence periods but has since suffered decline.

“Today, we have only 129 technical colleges in the country compared to 15,000 senior secondary schools. This imbalance needs urgent correction,” Bugaje said.

Describing the effort as a rebirth for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, he emphasized that equipping young people with practical skills is essential for economic growth and tackling youth unemployment.

Details on how students can benefit from the grant will be announced by NBTE in due course.
