A Nigerian pilgrim, Hajiya Zainab from Plateau State, stunned many after returning a whopping $5,000 (₦8.24 million) she found at the sacred Masjidul Haram in Makkah to its rightful owner, a Russian national.

According to reports, Zainab discovered the lost foreign currency on Tuesday, May 27, during her pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Rather than keep the money, which could have easily vanished without trace, she handed it over to the authorities, sparking widespread admiration.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Plateau State Pilgrims Board, led by Hon. Daiyabu Dauda, confirmed the story and hailed her integrity.

“She demonstrated exceptional integrity and honesty by returning $5,000 she found in Masjidul Haram to its rightful owner. That’s a remarkable act of kindness,” Dauda said.

Meanwhile, NAHCON is locked in talks with Saudi authorities to reopen visa processing for Nigerian pilgrims who are still hoping to perform the Hajj this year.

In a statement by Fatima Sanda Usara, Assistant Director of Information and Publications, the Commission revealed that Nigeria is among several nations pushing for visa resumption.

“There is optimism for a positive outcome, and when that is realised, the Commission will immediately transport the registered pilgrims for the Hajj in another special arrangement,” she said.

NAHCON has also deployed standby staff in preparation for a swift response once clearance is granted.

Nigerians React: “Zainab Deserves a National Honour!”

On social media, Zainab’s gesture has gone viral, with many calling for her to be honoured by the Nigerian government:

@NaijaFaithful: “She should be given a medal or even a presidential award! So rare to see this kind of honesty.”

@HausaPrideTV: “This is the kind of story we should amplify. Real character. Real values. God bless her.”

@OdogwuTweets: “She gave back over ₦8 million in this economy? May God bless her and reward her far beyond that money.”
