Nigeria’s Music Bubble About to Burst? Industry Insider Sounds the Alarm!

Nigerian music executive Bizzle Osikoya recently voiced concerns about the country’s music industry, suggesting it’s heading for a decline.

During his appearance on CreativiTea, Osikoya highlighted a significant skills gap among industry professionals. He believes the focus on achieving instant fame is overshadowing the need for a strong, sustainable foundation.

Osikoya argues that this lack of professionalism and structure is why many Nigerian artists, after gaining initial success at home, choose to pursue their careers abroad.

“It feels like the industry is crashing because we aren’t building professionals,” he stated. “Everyone is chasing the limelight instead of creating a sustainable industry. They’re all looking for the next superstar.”

He added, “That’s why you see artists who leave Nigeria and don’t want to return. They’ve experienced how things work in other industries and want that level of professionalism, which they find lacking in Nigeria.”

Osikoya also pointed out that major international labels, like Sony, have struggled in Nigeria due to a poor understanding of the local market. He noted that only a few labels have successfully navigated it.

He emphasized the importance of increased collaboration and partnerships to strengthen the industry.

“Big labels like Sony are in Nigeria but aren’t successful because they don’t understand our market,” he said. “Only Mavin Records, Chocolate City, and YBNL seem to have a grasp on the Nigerian music market. Others treat it like a game.”

“We need to realize that not everyone can own a record label, so we must partner more. But everyone wants to start their own label because they think they can do it. We need to collaborate with established players.”
