Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has signaled his intention to play a central role in the political opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections, hinting at the formation of a coalition to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at the second edition of the Arewa Tech Fest held in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai openly declared that efforts are underway to rally political forces aimed at unseating the president. According to him, the coalition is gaining momentum and is determined to bring about a leadership change in the next electoral cycle.

“There was an important meeting last night (Tuesday) at 8pm concerning the coalition we’re building to ensure that President Tinubu returns to Lagos,” El-Rufai told the audience, explaining why he arrived late at the event. “The Katsina airport doesn’t operate after 8pm, so I couldn’t travel until this morning,” he added.

The former governor, who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has increasingly positioned himself as a prominent opposition figure. His remarks in Katsina indicate a deepening rift with the ruling party and growing alignment with forces seeking a change in leadership.

While outlining his vision for a political reset, El-Rufai also commended the current Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani. He noted that despite the planned transition, capable officials such as Tijani would be retained due to their performance. “We will still keep Bosun Tijani because he is doing good work,” he stated.

The Arewa Tech Fest, a platform designed to promote technological innovation and collaboration in northern Nigeria, brought together startups, investors, and tech stakeholders from across the region. El-Rufai’s remarks added a political layer to an otherwise developmental gathering.
