Officials Injured as Youths Storm Hisbah Office in Katsina Over Haircut Dispute

Tension erupted in Tandama community, Danja Local Government Area of Katsina State, after a group of youths launched an attack on a Hisbah office on Thursday evening, June 13, following a disagreement over hairstyle choices.
According to reports by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the confrontation began around 6:10 p.m. when Hisbah officials reportedly challenged a group of young men over their haircut styles, which the religious corps deemed inappropriate.
The situation quickly escalated into chaos as the youths, angered by what they perceived as overreach and harassment, stormed the Hisbah office in retaliation. Several Hisbah personnel were reportedly injured during the attack and were later taken to Danja General Hospital for treatment.
The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is currently underway to identify the attackers and ensure they are brought to justice.
The incident has reignited conversations around the role of Hisbah corps across northern Nigeria, with many accusing the religious enforcement body of overstepping its bounds and infringing on individual rights. Critics argue that moral policing under the guise of religious enforcement is increasingly leading to social tension and community unrest.
Zagazola highlighted that “people have decried the growing interference by Hisbah in the private lives of individuals, fueling resentment and conflict within communities.” He added that stakeholders are now calling on the government to reassess and regulate the activities of Hisbah groups to prevent further abuses and protect the civil liberties of citizens.
So far, no arrests have been made, but authorities say efforts are ongoing to restore calm in the area.
