Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde Highlights Big Pay Gap Between Hollywood and Nollywood Residuals

Veteran Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has once again sparked discussions about the need for reform in Nollywood, drawing on her personal experience to compare the payment systems of the Nigerian and American film industries.

In a recent Instagram story post, Omotola shared a striking contrast: while she continues to receive monthly residual payments from just two test projects during her brief four-year stint in Hollywood, her three decades and over 310 projects in Nollywood have yet to yield any residual earnings.

The actress posted a photo showing envelopes from SAG-AFTRA — the American actors’ union responsible for residual payments — alongside her pointed message: “Just 4 years in Hollywood, 2 test projects, monthly residuals. 30 years in Nollywood, 310+ projects, no residuals.”

Her post ended with the hashtags #NollywoodNeedsStructure and #UnlearntoRelearn, emphasizing the urgent need for the Nigerian film industry to adopt a more sustainable and fair compensation model for actors.

Omotola’s message resonates with many in the industry who have long called for better systems to reward the hard work and ongoing contributions of Nollywood’s talent.
