President Tinubu to Armed Forces: Secure Nigeria, Defend Democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong call to the Nigerian Armed Forces to intensify efforts in tackling the country’s persistent security challenges, emphasizing that securing the nation is vital for the survival of democracy and national progress.
Speaking during the induction of newly acquired Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet, the president—represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima—stated that democracy cannot thrive without a military that is fully prepared, well-trained, and properly equipped.
“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace. The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped,” Tinubu emphasized at the event held at the Presidential Air Fleet, Abuja, on Friday.
The occasion, which coincided with the NAF’s 61st anniversary, marked the formal introduction of two Augusta 109 helicopters into service. Vice President Shettima described the new aircraft as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities amid a complex and evolving security landscape.
“These helicopters are not just machines—they represent our renewed determination to end terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and other threats to national security. It is a strategic step that reflects our resolve to defend Nigeria and reinforce her leadership in Africa,” Shettima said.
Despite fiscal limitations, the Tinubu administration has continued to invest in defense, prioritizing the acquisition of modern assets and urging stronger regional cooperation to combat trans-border crimes. The Vice President pointed to the joint security initiative in the Lake Chad Basin as a model for enhanced collaboration.
“The multinational collaboration to bring peace to the Lake Chad region is an example that must be improved upon and replicated wherever necessary,” he noted.
He also charged the military to not only defend Nigeria internally but to actively participate in peacekeeping efforts across the continent and beyond.
On his part, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, confirmed that the NAF has taken delivery of nine new aircraft since 2024, including attack and surveillance helicopters, with 49 additional aircraft expected within the next two years.
- These include:
- 10 Augusta 109 Trekkers
- 12 AH-1 Zulu Attack Helicopters
- 24 M-346 Ground Attack Aircraft
- 3 Kata 295 Medium Airlift Aircraft
Air Marshal Abubakar further revealed that air and ground personnel are undergoing advanced training both locally and abroad to maintain and operate the equipment effectively. He added that the NAF is also investing in research and development, retrofitting existing rocket systems, and laying groundwork for local production of ammunition.
He thanked President Tinubu and Italy’s Leonardo Company, manufacturer of the Augusta helicopters, for their support and pledged that the aircraft would be deployed strategically to improve national security outcomes.
“With these new additions and strategic investments, we are confident that the Nigerian Air Force is better positioned to meet current and emerging security challenges,” Abubakar said.
