Saudi Arabia has confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, signaling that Eid-el-Adha will be celebrated on Thursday, June 6, 2025.

The official announcement was made on Tuesday via Haramain, a Saudi-based Islamic news platform on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that Wednesday, May 28, is the first day of Dhul Hijjah.

This development holds global religious significance, especially for Muslims preparing for Hajj—one of the five pillars of Islam. The Day of Arafat, considered the most sacred day of the pilgrimage, falls on Wednesday, June 5, with Eid-el-Adha following the next day.

Eid-el-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command. It is a period marked by prayers, charity, and the symbolic slaughtering of animals in Muslim communities across the world, including Nigeria.

In the coming days, religious leaders and Islamic authorities in Nigeria are expected to issue local confirmations based on moon sightings or align with the Saudi declaration, as is the custom in many Muslim-majority states.

Stay tuned for local updates from the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) regarding the official observance date within the country.
