See Faces Behind the Cockpit: First Photos and Names of Air India Crew Revealed After Tragic Plane Crash

The first photos and identities of the pilots and cabin crew aboard the ill-fated Air India Flight 171 have been released, painting a human face on the devastating tragedy that claimed nearly all 242 lives just moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
Leading the flight was Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a seasoned pilot with over 8,200 hours of flying experience. At his side was First Officer Clive Kunder, a young co-pilot from Mumbai who had clocked 1,100 flying hours and completed his aviation training at Florida’s Paris Air Flight School.
Among the cabin crew were Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam and Lamnunthem Singson, as well as senior members Shradha Dhavan, Aparna Mahadik, Saineeta Chakravarti, Deepak Pathak, Maithili Patil, Irfan Shaikh, Roshni Songhare Rajendra, and Manisha Thapa. These dedicated professionals were responsible for passenger safety and comfort, many of them young, vibrant individuals now mourned nationwide.

While the nation grieves, a glimmer of survival emerged in the form of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British-Indian father, who is believed to be the only person to have made it out alive. Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, described the terrifying moment the plane went down.
“Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” he recounted from his hospital bed. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I stood up and ran. Someone grabbed me and put me in an ambulance.”
The Dreamliner was en route to London with passengers from various nationalities — 159 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and a Canadian citizen. Onboard were also 11 children, including two newborns.
As investigations continue into what led to one of the worst air disasters in India’s history, these names and faces now represent not just a flight crew but a heartbreaking reminder of lives cut short — professionals who boarded with duty and passengers who boarded with dreams.
