President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under scrutiny after being spotted wearing a luxury wristwatch believed to be worth over ₦94 million, sparking sharp reactions across social media and fueling conversations around extravagance in leadership during economic hardship.

The President was seen donning a Patek Philippe Nautilus wristwatch during a recent high-profile meeting with chess champion Tunde Onakoya, who recently set a Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.

According to watch enthusiasts and online sleuths, the model worn by Tinubu is priced at $61,280, which translates to approximately ₦94,170,316.80 at the current official exchange rate.

While some Nigerians brushed it off as a personal item from Tinubu’s long-standing wealth, others were far less forgiving—especially considering the country’s economic challenges, soaring inflation, and currency devaluation.

One user wrote,

“This is a man asking citizens to endure hardship. ₦94 million on one wrist? It’s not just tone-deaf, it’s outrageous.”

Another commented,

“Money when dey this country too long. Now we see where it sits—in plain sight.”

A few others tried to downplay the controversy, arguing that Tinubu was already wealthy before becoming president, and suggesting the watch could have been a gift or an old possession.

“This one wey look like #750 aboki watch?” one user joked, implying the modest appearance of the luxury piece.

But amid the banter, a deeper frustration was evident. Many see the expensive accessory as symbolic of the widening disconnect between political elites and the struggling masses.

As reactions continue to pour in, the Presidency has not issued any official comment regarding the watch or the criticisms trailing it.

For now, the glint on the President’s wrist has become more than just a fashion statement—it’s a national conversation.
