See What Godwin Emefiele is Accused Of: Arraignment Over 753 Duplexes Scandal

Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is set to appear before Justice Hallilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court today, June 16, 2025, over fresh charges stemming from the alleged illegal acquisition of a sprawling estate in Abuja. The property, located at Plot 109 in Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, covers over 150,000 square meters and comprises 753 duplexes, which have since been forfeited to the federal government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed new charges (CR/350/25, dated May 30, 2025), accusing Emefiele of unlawfully obtaining the estate and allegedly siphoning billions of naira through proxy accounts. The charges also allege that Emefiele conspired with one Eric Ocheme—who remains at large—to orchestrate the illicit acquisition.

According to the EFCC, the disputed estate was previously recovered from an unnamed former senior government official, prompting the FCT High Court in Apo to issue a forfeiture order. In a recent development, Emefiele’s counsel, A.M. Kotoye (SAN), sought to be joined in the case as an interested party; however, the court dismissed the application.

As the arraignment unfolds, this high-profile case further underscores the ongoing crackdown on corruption in Nigeria’s financial and public sectors, while adding another chapter to the controversies surrounding the former CBN governor.
