A Nigerian youth corps member currently serving in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has donated his entire monthly NYSC allowance to a federal hospital, a gesture that’s earned him admiration across the country.

The young man, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and former president of the institution’s Student Union, handed over his full allowance to the Federal Hospital in Abeokuta. The donation was made public through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the handle @TheGreatestIFE, which is affiliated with OAU.

“A former President of the Obafemi Awolowo University Student Union, currently serving in Abeokuta as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, has donated his entire monthly allowance to the Federal Hospital, Abeokuta,” the tweet read.

While many see the NYSC allowance as barely enough to get by, the corps member’s decision to give it all away struck a chord with Nigerians. The post quickly gained traction online, drawing heartfelt reactions and praise for the young man’s leadership and compassion.

Some users took to the comments to share similar stories or express their admiration.

@Sageosness wrote: “Me too in 2009, I changed two tattered Nigerian flags of two public primary schools in a very remote village in OFU LGA, Kogi State. I got them new ones. The post above reminded me of that little personal contribution to the community I served during NYSC 16 years ago.”

@ASeji17 added, “You see, in this Nigeria, just have brain and know what you’re doing. Ogun State government will reward him in multiple ways. Brother’s hood is proud of you.”

However, not everyone was entirely sold on the gesture. Some commenters viewed the act through a skeptical lens, questioning the intentions behind it.

@BlvckKorey commented, “A former student union president donated allawee and I’m supposed to praise him? Hehe… do you even know how fraudulent and corrupt those mofos are? 😂😂😂 He donated allawee out of how much he don tiff before?”

Still, the overall sentiment online was largely positive. Many praised the gesture as a reminder that public service can still be driven by a genuine desire to help others — even in a country where hardship often pushes many to do the opposite.

While the corps member has not yet made a public statement about his donation, Nigerians continue to commend his sacrifice and hope his act will inspire others in positions of influence to prioritize service over self.
