Panic gripped parts of Ibadan on Monday morning after a man reportedly fell from one of the upper floors of the iconic 26-storey Cocoa House, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s oldest skyscraper and the surrounding business district.

Eyewitnesses say the fall was sudden and horrifying, and for many, it’s a sight they’ll never forget.

“At first, I thought it was a huge bird dropping from the sky,” one onlooker said. “It wasn’t until the body landed that I realised, this was a human being. I was too stunned to even bring out my phone.”

Another witness recalled the terrifying moment the man crashed onto the roof near the security post before hitting the ground.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It all happened so fast, yet it felt like time stopped.”

The identity of the victim remains unknown, and at the time of filing this report, no official cause has been confirmed. Authorities are still investigating whether the fall was accidental, deliberate, or linked to a structural issue within the landmark building.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Odu’a Investment Company Limited, the firm that manages Cocoa House, acknowledged the incident and said emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately.

According to Victor Ayetoro, Head of Branding and Communication for Odu’a Group:

“The individual involved was swiftly attended to by the emergency response team and taken to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, for urgent medical attention.”

The company said it is working closely with the police and other relevant agencies to get to the bottom of the incident, adding that safety remains a top priority.

As of now, the victim’s condition is still unknown, and officials have yet to release any identifying details.

The incident has raised fresh questions about access control and safety measures in one of the state’s most historic buildings.
