See Why Kenneth Okonkwo Calls Labour Party a ‘Secret Society’

Kenneth Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party and a key figure in the party’s 2023 presidential campaign, has publicly lashed out at the party’s leadership, branding it a “secret society” led by “a group of clowns.”

In an explosive interview with Symfoni TV, Okonkwo accused Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi of betrayal, poor leadership, and aligning with what he described as “anti-progressive elements” within the party. He claimed that Obi’s continued association with Julius Abure’s faction—allegedly sympathetic to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—has further fractured the party and alienated loyal supporters.

“The problem is that Peter Obi refused to manage the party. He chose to align with the very people who are allegedly hobnobbing with the APC. When people advised him to separate himself from that faction, he paid deaf ears,” Okonkwo said.

According to the actor-turned-politician, Obi’s actions betray the ideals that fuelled the massive grassroots support during the 2023 elections. He also accused Obi of endorsing candidates from other political parties, ignoring the Labour Party’s own structure.

“When we started in 2023, it was an organic movement. Every Nigerian wanted change. I joined of my own accord, and when I was appointed spokesperson, I gave it my all,” he recalled. “But instead of consolidating for 2027, Obi has failed to even start with his own party.”

Okonkwo didn’t hold back when describing his disappointment, declaring:

“Any politician who knows what he is doing cannot be betrayed by anybody. If there is anybody who betrayed the other, I can say it emphatically that Peter Obi betrayed me.”

He also challenged Obi’s capacity to convert mass support into electoral victory. “He has proved that even if the people vote for him, he doesn’t have what it takes to secure the mandate.”

Notably, Okonkwo had exited the Labour Party in July 2024, stating at the time that the party had devolved into a “secret society.” He said he could no longer align himself with a party that lacked transparency, accountability, and clear direction.

His parting words continue to resonate:

“The Labour Party has become a secret society led by a group of clowns.”

So far, Peter Obi has not issued a direct response to Okonkwo’s comments. However, the unfolding rift has sparked intense conversations online, with many questioning the Labour Party’s ability to remain a unified force ahead of 2027.
