A 52-year-old Canadian returnee, Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, was on Friday sentenced to three months in prison by a Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, after he was found guilty of multiple offenses, including crossing the Ojota Expressway, resisting arrest, and assaulting a Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officer.

The court handed down the sentence after Idowu pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him.

The incident reportedly occurred when Idowu attempted to cross the busy Ojota Expressway illegally. Upon being stopped by a KAI official, he resisted arrest and physically assaulted the officer. The matter was immediately escalated, and he was arraigned before the court.

Reacting to the conviction, Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, commended the swift judicial process. He issued a stern warning that the state government would not condone any form of aggression or assault on its officials carrying out their lawful duties.

“No individual, regardless of social status, will be allowed to take the law into their hands,” Wahab said. “This conviction sends a clear message that our environmental enforcement officers will be protected and the law will be applied equally to all.”

Wahab expressed hope that this case would serve as a deterrent to others who believe they are above the law or can disrespect public officers without consequence.
