Tanker Explosion Rocks Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Two Injured, Several Vehicles Burnt

A petrol-laden tanker exploded in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, injuring two people and damaging multiple vehicles.

The incident occurred at the NASFAT area of the expressway, causing panic among commuters and bringing traffic to a halt.

According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the tanker overturned and burst into flames, igniting a fiery explosion that affected six vehicles, including four trucks, a commercial bus, and a Toyota Camry.

TRACE officials and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further damage. The two injured victims were promptly taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital in Shagamu for medical attention.

Authorities are yet to confirm the cause of the tanker’s fall, but traffic flow on the expressway was disrupted for hours as rescue teams cleared the wreckage and ensured safety for other road users.

Eyewitnesses captured dramatic footage of the explosion and its aftermath, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky and charred vehicles lining the roadside.

Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously and obey traffic regulations, especially when approaching areas prone to accidents and fuel tanker transits.
