Tears and Cheers as Peter Obi Comforts Elderly Woman After Her Goods Spill—Pays for Everything She Lost

A heartfelt moment involving former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has reignited hope in compassionate leadership.
While en route to the funeral of veteran Nollywood actress Mrs. Nkechi Winifred Nweje, Peter Obi reportedly stopped his convoy to assist an elderly woman whose goods had spilled while she tried to board a bus. The incident, shared on X by user @TheSerahIbrahim, quickly went viral and drew widespread admiration.
According to Serah, Obi noticed the woman struggling to lift a heavy bucket. She lost her balance, fell, and her bucket of food items toppled to the ground. Witnessing the scene, Obi instructed his driver to stop, stepped out of the vehicle, and went to help her.
“He made sure she was okay,” Serah wrote, adding that the woman, surprised and emotional, smiled and asked for a hug—which Obi obliged.
The woman revealed that the spilled items cost her ₦8,000. She had hoped to make just ₦2,000 in profit by selling them for ₦10,000 at the market. Devastated that some goods were damaged, she feared a complete loss.
Obi, visibly touched, gave her money to cover the full cost of the goods. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she screamed in joy, hugged him again, and even offered him some of her wares in appreciation.
Serah used the moment to highlight the economic strain many Nigerians face daily:
“The daily reality of the poor is harrowing. All they want is to survive. Meanwhile, the elite live extravagantly. This moment shows what leadership with compassion looks like.”
She ended her post with the now-popular Labour Party slogan: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
