Tems’ Manager Opens Up About a Moment That Changed Everything

Behind every music icon is often an untold story of grit, grace, and someone who believed before the world caught on. For Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems, that believer was her manager and friend, Muyiwa Awoniyi.
In a revealing conversation on the latest episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Muyiwa offered a deeply personal account of how their paths crossed, and how a young woman with just ₦200 in her account went on to become one of Africa’s most celebrated voices.
“When I met Tems, she had about 200 Naira in her account,” Muyiwa recalled. “She wasn’t financially buoyant in any capacity. She would just be sitting around when I was recording my podcast with my cousin.”
But despite the odds, something about her stood out, her kindness. “Even though she didn’t have a way of earning, she would order food for us,” he shared, still visibly moved by the memory. “I realised then, she’s not like everyone else I’ve met in Nigeria.”
Their bond evolved naturally. It wasn’t born out of contracts or expectations but rooted in mutual respect and a shared dream. For the first three months, they were simply friends. When Tems eventually asked Muyiwa to be her manager, he agreed, expecting the usual resistance many artists show when paperwork enters the room. But Tems surprised him again.
“She was the one chasing me to sign my own part of the agreement. I’ve never seen that before,” he said.

That moment changed everything. Instead of a traditional management deal, they decided to start a company together, a decision that would mark the beginning of Tems’ journey from an unknown Lagos singer to a global sensation.
