TikTok User Sentenced for Abusing Naira After Daring EFCC Online

A Kaduna-based TikTok user, Muhammad Kabir, also known by his handle @youngcee0066, has been sentenced by Justice R.M. Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Kaduna for abusing and mutilating the Nigerian currency.
Kabir was arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he posted a viral video on TikTok and Instagram. In the video, he could be seen spraying naira notes on the ground, stepping on them, and issuing a challenge in Hausa daring the EFCC to arrest him at his known location in Tudun Wada, Kaduna State.

Following his arrest on May 29, 2025, Kabir was arraigned and charged with a violation of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits the abuse and mutilation of the naira. The charge carries a punishment under Section 21(1) of the same Act.
Upon reading the amended charge in court, Kabir pleaded guilty, prompting the prosecuting counsel, M.U. Gadaka, to request his conviction. Justice Aikawa subsequently sentenced him to six months imprisonment or an alternative fine of ₦300,000 to be paid to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The EFCC has since reiterated its stance against currency abuse and warned citizens that flaunting or mishandling the naira—whether offline or on social media—will not go unpunished.
