Tinubu Said He Never Blocked Party Registrations—Here’s What Else He Added

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed widespread claims that his administration is working to block the registration of new political parties or push Nigeria toward a one-party system.

Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, as part of Democracy Day celebrations, the President clarified that he had not issued any directive to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt the registration of new parties.

“I have never stopped the registration of any political party,” Tinubu stated firmly, addressing growing speculation over the political direction of the country.

He went further to stress that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on diversity and that no effort was being made to undermine that foundation. However, he pointedly added that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains open to defectors and would not shut its doors to those who wish to align with the party’s ideals.

“The APC would be guilty of political malpractice if it closed its doors to those who now seek to join,” he said, shortly before welcoming new members from Delta and Akwa Ibom States into the party.

Tinubu’s remarks didn’t stop at clarifying policy. He also took a swipe at opposition parties struggling with internal conflicts. “It is indeed a pleasure to watch your houses in disarray,” he said, drawing a round of mixed reactions from observers.

The President’s comments came on a symbolic day in Nigeria’s political calendar—Democracy Day, which commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 election and honours the legacy of MKO Abiola. Tinubu, a veteran of the pro-democracy movement, used the occasion to reinforce his administration’s commitment to democratic values, even as political tensions remain high across several states.

With this latest statement, the President appears to be positioning himself as both a defender of multiparty democracy and a confident leader watching from a distance as opposition parties struggle to find their footing.
