Tinubu to Address Joint National Assembly Session on June 12, Confer National Honours on Lawmakers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, as part of events commemorating this year’s Democracy Day.
The address, scheduled for 12:00 noon at the House of Representatives chamber in Abuja, will be preceded by preliminary proceedings from 11:00 a.m., according to a statement released on Sunday, June 8, by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi. The statement was based on an internal memo issued by the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria.
This year’s Democracy Day is themed “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” It marks more than two decades of uninterrupted civilian governance in Nigeria, with June 12 designated to honour the landmark 1993 presidential election widely considered Nigeria’s most credible. The election, won by the late Moshood Abiola, was annulled by the then military regime under General Ibrahim Babangida (retd).
President Tinubu will also confer national honours on select lawmakers during the joint session, further highlighting the role of the legislature in the country’s democratic evolution.
“The programme will feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly, along with the conferment of national honours by Mr. President,” Rotimi said.
He described the upcoming session as a “significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” reinforcing the National Assembly’s role in promoting democratic values, institutional accountability, and sustainable development.
