Update on Ibadan Tragedy: Policeman Arrested After Student’s Death

A police corporal involved in the shooting that claimed the life of a 14-year-old student in Ibadan has been arrested, according to the Oyo State Police Command.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning along the Gbagi-Alakia Road, as the victim, Kehinde Alade, was en route to write his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Kehinde, who was seated in the back seat of a black Honda driven by his father, Odunayo Alade, was fatally hit by a stray bullet during a police traffic operation.
The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed that the officer involved, whose name has not been disclosed, is now in custody. The Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, has ordered a full-scale investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Preliminary police reports allege that the victim’s father was driving against traffic in an attempt to evade arrest by officials of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police. In the process, the vehicle reportedly collided with patrol vehicles belonging to OYRTMA and the police.
“In a bid to prevent further damage,” the police said in a statement, “a police corporal discharged his firearm, aiming at the tyres of the fleeing vehicle. Unfortunately, the bullet struck Kehinde Alade, who was seated directly behind the driver.”
Kehinde was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. His body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and civil society groups, many of whom have called for justice and accountability. In response, the Commissioner of Police has deployed tactical units and intelligence operatives across key areas in Ibadan to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“The Oyo State Police Command deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and extends heartfelt condolences to the Alade family,” the statement read. “We remain committed to ensuring that justice is served and that thorough disciplinary procedures are followed.”
As investigations continue, the command has pledged to keep the public informed of any developments.
