US-Based Nigerian Harassed by Police Over Dreadlocks, Escapes Bribe Trap After Embassy Call

A US-based Nigerian man has taken to social media to express outrage after allegedly being harassed and profiled by Nigerian police officers simply for wearing dreadlocks and refusing to pay a bribe.
In a viral video shared by @GossipMillNaija on X (formerly Twitter), the man recounted how he was stopped and searched without cause, with officers reportedly accusing him based on his appearance.
“They stopped me just because I have dreadlocks,” he said, visibly frustrated. “They searched my things and said they’d take me to the station if I didn’t cooperate. It was all about getting a bribe.”

Despite the pressure, the man stood his ground, refusing to hand over any money. Instead, he contacted the U.S. embassy to report the incident.
According to him, that phone call changed everything. Upon hearing that the embassy was now involved, the officers allegedly backed off and let him go.
“They were flexing their power, trying to intimidate me,” he added. “But I knew what they were after. I didn’t give them a dime.”
