What Took Nigeria’s Defence Chief to Moscow Amid Growing Global Tensions

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has paid a high-level visit to Russia, engaging with the Russian Minister of Defence, Mr. Andrey Belousov, to explore avenues for strengthening military collaboration between both nations.
The strategic meeting, held on May 10, 2025, at Russia’s Ministry of Defence headquarters in Moscow, comes in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to assist Nigeria in combating insecurity, particularly terrorism.
According to Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, General Musa used the visit to clearly present the operational needs of the Nigerian Armed Forces, emphasizing areas where Russia could lend technical, logistical, and strategic support.
“The visit was highly rewarding and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to military cooperation with Russia,” Gusau stated, adding that the meeting also coincided with Russia’s 80th Victory Day celebration—symbolizing Nigeria’s solidarity with the Russian people.
Russian Defence Minister Belousov, in turn, assured General Musa of Moscow’s readiness to support Nigeria’s armed forces under existing military-technical cooperation agreements. He also highlighted mechanisms such as the Intergovernmental Working Group, which could fast-track joint efforts and deliver actionable outcomes.
The trip builds on earlier engagements, including one earlier this year where Lt. Gen. Averianov, representing President Putin, described Nigeria as a “critical partner” in Africa and reiterated Russia’s intent to supply arms, provide strategic training, and enhance operational capacities to support Nigeria’s security agenda.
