What Triggered Ini Ememobong’s Exit From Umo Eno’s Cabinet

Governor Umo Eno’s decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has already started to shake up his cabinet, with Ini Ememobong stepping down from his role as Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport.

The resignation was confirmed in a Facebook post, where Ememobong made it clear that he couldn’t align himself with the new political direction of the administration.

“I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive… I am unable to join in that sojourn,” he wrote.

He emphasized that while he holds no grudge against the governor’s decision, his personal convictions and long-standing opposition to the APC make it impossible for him to continue in office under the new arrangement.

Despite his exit, Ememobong spoke respectfully about Governor Eno and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve under both Eno and former Governor Udom Emmanuel.

“I look back with great satisfaction at the work I have done and leave the ultimate judgement to history and posterity,” he wrote. “Given another opportunity, I will do more.”

His resignation appears to be a direct response to Eno’s earlier directive that all appointees must follow him into the APC or resign from their posts.

“Prepare to resign the day I announce that I am moving… Your loyalty is fully to me. You can’t be in my cabinet and play anti-party,” Eno had said.

This development marks a major turning point in the state’s political alignment, and Ememobong’s decision could signal the beginning of more high-level departures from the current administration.
