Why Good People Can’t Govern Nigeria – Peter Obi Spills the Hard Truth

At a packed thanksgiving service in Umuahia, former presidential candidate Peter Obi made a stirring remark that’s catching national attention: Nigeria, he said, is a country where it’s hard for good people to govern.

The Labour Party flagbearer for the 2023 elections made the statement while joining Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to celebrate his two years in office. The event, held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, drew a large crowd of supporters, clergy, and political figures.

“It’s tough to lead in Nigeria, especially when you choose to lead with honesty and transparency,” Obi told the congregation. “That’s why I urge you to always pray for Governor Otti and his team. Pray also for Nigeria. We need leaders whose hearts are moved to use public funds for public good.”

He applauded Otti’s performance so far, saying the Abia governor had proven that transformation doesn’t require a decade. “People always say they need eight years to fix things, but change can start in just one day. What we’re seeing in Abia is real and visible—you don’t need a radio to tell you.”

Obi, who has often been described as a symbol of integrity in Nigerian politics, insisted that his mission is not about personal ambition but about fixing the country. “I’m not desperate to become President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work,” he emphasized.

Responding, Governor Otti gave all credit to God, quoting from 1 Corinthians 3:6–7: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase.” He said that while his team has worked hard, it’s been divine backing that made the difference.

He also expressed gratitude to the state legislature, judiciary, and civil servants, describing their cooperation as instrumental to the success of “the new Abia project.”

Otti hailed Peter Obi as a “beacon of good governance,” thanking him for his consistent support over the years.

The event was filled with music, prayers, and testimonies, marking two years of leadership many believe has redefined governance in the state.
