“Why Is Black Always the Problem?” – Kanayo O. Kanayo Questions Longstanding Religious Practice in Viral Video

Veteran Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo, is at the center of public conversation after raising questions about a deeply rooted tradition in the Catholic Church.

In a video that has now gained wide attention, the actor addressed the symbolism behind the black and white smoke used during papal elections. According to him, the choice of black smoke to signify a failed outcome and white to announce success sends the wrong message, especially in a world still grappling with the legacy of racial bias.

He urged the Vatican to reconsider the color symbolism, stating that these representations, although historical, carry a weight that affects how society views Blackness.

“Why is it that when no Pope is elected, the smoke is black? But when a Pope is finally elected, the smoke turns white?” he asked, suggesting alternatives like blue smoke to neutralize the narrative.

The actor, who has never shied away from speaking on cultural or societal issues, noted that such practices — though long accepted — may unconsciously reinforce the idea that black equals bad and white equals good.

His comments have since drawn a mix of support and criticism online, with some agreeing that symbols matter, while others argue that the tradition is purely ceremonial and not racially motivated.

Still, Kanayo insists that if the Church is committed to global inclusivity, it must start by reviewing even the most subtle elements of its practice.

The conversation, though unexpected, has forced many to reconsider the weight of tradition and the messages they carry, especially in institutions that influence millions worldwide.
