Why King Charles Finally Knighted David Beckham — After 20 Years of an OBE

Two decades after receiving his OBE, football icon David Beckham has finally been knighted, a long-anticipated royal honour that fans and pundits alike say was well overdue.

Beckham, 49, was officially listed in King Charles III’s 2025 Birthday Honours and will now be known as Sir David Beckham. The recognition comes in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to sport and global charity work, both on and off the pitch.

In a heartfelt statement following the announcement, Beckham described the knighthood as “an emotional moment” and “a boyhood dream come true.”

“To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career,” he said. “Off the pitch, I’ve been lucky to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that support communities and inspire the next generation.”

Many observers say the honour was long in the making. Since being appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003, Beckham has grown from a football superstar to a global statesman of sport — representing the UK on the world stage, promoting children’s rights as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and most recently joining The King’s Foundation in 2024.

His knighthood follows a career that saw him earn 115 England caps, lead the national team as captain 59 times, and score in three consecutive World Cups. At club level, Beckham won six Premier League titles with Manchester United, was part of the historic 1999 treble-winning squad, and enjoyed spells at Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Off the field, Beckham helped bring the 2012 Olympics to London and now co-owns Inter Miami CF, where he’s played a pivotal role in growing Major League Soccer’s global presence.

While the decision to knight Beckham wasn’t sudden, many believe the timing — just over a year after he joined King Charles’ foundation and with his continued dedication to public service — finally aligned with royal protocol and sentiment.

On social media, fans and celebrities flooded his pages with congratulatory messages. Manchester United, the club where Beckham made his name, posted: “Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement, Becks — you truly deserve this.”

Beckham joins a select group of football legends to receive knighthood, including Sir Bobby Charlton and Sir Alex Ferguson. His elevation to Sir David is seen not just as a tribute to his glittering playing career, but a recognition of his quiet, consistent service to charity, country, and culture.

And for millions of fans around the world, the message is simple: it’s about time.
